Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics weekend in review

Queens Hockey and the two basketball teams were all in action this past weekend at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

The women’s hockey team shut out the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in both games while the Kings stretched their winning streak to six games with back-to-back victories over the Portage College Voyageurs.

In basketball, the Queens were able to calm the storm against the St. Mary’s University Lightning and earn back-to-back victories while the Kings fell to the Lightning in both games this weekend.

Lastly, in Indoor Track, the Kings and Queens had a successful day at the Running Room Grand Prix #1 in Edmonton at the Kinsmen Sports Centre.

Hockey

Medicine Hat College Rattlers (0-18) at Queens (15-4)

The Queens offence shined this past weekend as they outscored the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 20-0 in the two games played. Forwards Annalisa Trieber (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) and Sarah Webster (Bachelor of Kinesiology) were awarded the player of the game honour after they both scored their first ACAC goal.

Forward Julie Wagner (Bachelor of Arts in Communication) also scored her first ACAC hat trick and ended the weekend with a total of six points. The Queens now sit five points back of the NAIT Ooks for first place with two games in hand.

Kings (11-7) at Portage College Voyageurs (1-15)

The Kings continued their impressive January as they extended their winning streak to six games with back-to-back victories over the Portage College Voyageurs on the road. On the road trip, RDP outscored the Voyageurs 11-3.

Forward Ryland McNinch (Bachelor of Education) was awarded the player of the game as he finished the night with two goals and one assist in the 6-1 victory. He is now two goals back of teammate Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education) who is tied for the league lead in this department.

On Saturday, forward Dawson Leroux was awarded the honour with a two-point performance in the 5-2 win. The Kings have now jumped up to second place in the conference.

Basketball

Queens (15-1) vs St. Mary’s University Lightning (10-7)

• Friday, January 26 | 6 pm in Calgary

• Saturday, January 27 | 6 pm in Red Deer

The Queens continued their winning ways this past weekend but they were put to the test, specifically on Saturday, as they battled with the St. Mary’s University Lightning. On Friday night, the Polytechnic earned an impressive 80-54 victory on the road in Calgary with forward Jayden Demchuk (Practical Nurse Diploma) earning herself the player of the game honour. She finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.

The following day, the Lightning made the Queens work for it, but RDP ultimately came away with a 74-67 victory. Post Peighton Melton (Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies) was named the player of the game after leading her team on offence with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Kings (11-5) vs St. Mary’s University Lightning (15-2)

• Friday, January 26 | 8 pm in Calgary

• Saturday, January 27 | 8 pm in Red Deer

The Kings knew they were going to be in for a battle this weekend as they faced off with the St. Mary’s University Lightning, who sit in first place in the South Division. But the Polytechnic could not find a way to hold on to the lead in the fourth quarter in both games. The Kings fell 103-96 on Friday in Calgary with guard Eduardo Crespo (Business Diploma) being named the player of the game with 27 points off the bench.

On Saturday, the Kings saw their lead diminish in the final minutes of the fourth quarter with the Lightning coming out on top 96-94. Guard Efe Iyamu (Open Studies) was named the player of the game who had 15 points in the loss.

With these two losses, the Kings sit in third place with 22 points which is eight back of St. Mary’s University.

Kings and Queens Indoor Track

January 27 hosted by Concordia University at the Kinsmen Sports Centre

It was a very successful weekend for the Kings and Queens Indoor Track teams in their 2024 season debut. Loami Rautenbach (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) started the day off on a winning note as she was the fastest runner in the 300m dash with a time of just over 44 seconds.

In the 3000m, Justine Larson (Bachelor of Education) and Georgia Sawchuk (Bachelor of Science in Psychology) finished right after each other in second and third. In the men’s race, Ben House (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) finished in second while Ben Higham (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) came in third to round out the podium. In the 4x200m relay, the Queens took home the top spot with a time of 1:54 which was six seconds faster than the second-place Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

The 60m sprint made its debut on the ACAC circuit with Rautenbach finishing the race in second place, just a tenth of a second slower than the first place runner.

Larson took home her second place of the day in the 1500m with a time of 5:36. On the men’s side, the Kings swept the podium with House finishing in first, Higham in second and Jordan Coen (Bachelor of Kinesiology) in third with the three runners all separated by 10 seconds.

The Queens would sweep the relay races after taking home first place in the 4x400m, 17 seconds ahead of the second-place Kodiaks. The Kings were able to conclude their day by finishing in third place in this relay with a time of 3:53. The next Running Room Grand Prix will take place on home turf with the Red Deer Polytechnic hosting the Indoor Track meet on February 10.
