National accreditation on the agenda for Red Deer Hospice

Red Deer Hospice has achieved a new tier of accreditation.

Accreditation Primer status is awarded by Accreditation Canada, a level of accreditation not required by hospice facilities in Alberta. However, more have been encouraged to apply for it in recent years.

Alberta hospices are currently required to meet provincial standards set out by Alberta Health Services and Alberta Health.

“I am very proud of the entire team and the hard work they put into this,” said Hospice Board Chair, Candace Spurrell. “When you see the Accreditation Canada Primer seal, residents and families can be certain that everyone at Red Deer Hospice is working hard to deliver safe and quality care.”

Executive Director Jerri Taylor likens it to a hotel having its star rating upgraded.

An evaluation carried out in October by Accreditation Canada surveyors covered areas such as strategic planning, service delivery, communications, human resources, ethics, and risk management.

A detailed report from said evaluation stated the organization had scored 99 per cent.

“Achieving a near-perfect score confirms we have very high standards when it comes to the care of our residents,” said Taylor. “Every day, we live our mission of providing a peaceful and compassionate end-of-life journey.”

The report allows Red Deer Hospice to identify areas of improvement and familiarize itself with the process it’ll go through to become fully accredited nationally. That program is called Qmentum, and will be done in 2025, Taylor notes.
