Rebels still seeking home win after 4-2 loss to Tigers

The Red Deer Rebels are still without a win this season on home ice after a 4-2 loss against the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

The Rebels announced their leadership team earlier in the day; Kai Uchacz now serving as captain, with Kalan Lind, Hunter Mayo, Mats Lindgren, and Jhett Larson as alternates.

The home team also had veterans Lind, Mayo, and Lindgren return for their first game this season after completing their time with various NHL Camps, each making their mark during Friday’s matchup.

Mayo scored the first goal of the game at 3:21 on Medicine Hat’s Evan May. Picking up a drop pass from Dwayne Jean Jr., Matthew Gard also earned an assist, putting the Rebels up 1-0.

However, at 7:06, Medicine Hat’s Shane Smith tied the game with an unassisted goal on Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey.

At 12:35, the Tigers took a 2-1 lead when Tomas Mrsic scored, with assists by Gavin McKenna and Tyler MacKenzie.

After one period, the Rebels were outshooting the Tigers 16-13.

In the middle frame, the Tigers extended their lead with a goal at 14:08 by Cayden Lindstrom, assisted by Oasiz Wiesblatt and Josh Van.

The visitors led 3-1, and outshot Red Deer in the second 14-13.

In the final period, the Rebels cut the deficit to one on a power play; Medicine Hat’s Rhett Parsons was in the box for interference. Lindgren scored from the slot at 6:46, with Uchacz and Lind getting the apples, making the score 3-2.

But any Rebels momentum was halted when Matteo Fabrizi received a high-sticking minor at 13:52, and the Tigers capitalized, with Lindstrom scoring at 14:41. McKenna and Wiesblatt got the helpers on that one, doubling their lead to 4-2.

The Rebels outshot the Tigers in the third period 10-6.

The Rebels are now 1-2-0-0 on the season while the Tigers are undefeated after three games.

Rebels coach Derrick Walser said while the team did well on offense, they lacked on defence.

“You start showing them stats where guys score their NHL goals two feet from the net; we get four goals within two inches of the net and that’s how you score goals; simple as that. They [Medicine Hat] won the blue paint battle tonight and good for them,” he said.

“I thought the Tigers played meaner around their net and we didn’t play mean enough around our net.”

He added that while the team worked hard, they didn’t play smart at times, particularly when it came to details on the power play or on face-offs.

With the Rebels not playing for another week, he says they will use that time to practice and get back in sync as a team.

The Rebels play again on home ice at 7 p.m. against the Prince Albert Raiders on October 6. The broadcast, including pre-game, can be heard live on 106.7 REWIND Radio starting at 6:30.
