Young cyclist hit by vehicle in Springbrook over weekend

A young girl is recovering after being hit by a vehicle in Springbrook, south of Red Deer, this past weekend.

RCMP confirm it was about 2:45 p.m. on Sept. 2 when they received a report of a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle near Tamarac Boulevard and Oak Street in Springbrook.

“Investigation has revealed that a mother and her two children were riding bikes, when one of the children, a five-year-old girl, began crossing the road in front of the vehicle that had stopped for a stop sign,” says Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

“The driver didn’t see the cyclist, however, and proceeded into the intersection, striking the girl.”

The girl was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Meantime, the driver of the vehicle was charged under the Traffic Safety Act and given a five of $562.

“For one, this situation is very unfortunate, but it could’ve been much worse. In this case, for drivers, it’s important to remember that when we approach intersections, we need to be doubly sure there are no pedestrians in our way, and not be in such a rush to get where we’re going,” adds Savinkoff.

“For cyclists and the parents with them, we need to teach our kids that stopping isn’t enough. We want to ensure we’re making eye contact with the driver so that we can acknowledge one another. You’re in a crosswalk and expect people to stop, but take that extra step.”
