Red Deer’s unemployment rate jumps in January

Feb 11, 2023 | 12:03 PM

Red Deer’s unemployment rate for Jan. 2023 is 7.7 per cent, according to Statistics Canada.

That’s up a whole point, from, 6.7 per cent, in Dec. 2022, and up from 7.4 per cent a year ago.

Meantime, Alberta’s rate increased for the fourth month in a row, this time by 0.9 per cent to 6.0 per cent. That increase is equal to nearly 21,000 jobs, a release from ATB Economics says.

ATB, notes, however, that because growth in the number of people searching for work increased faster than total employment, the rise was closer to just 0.4 per cent.

Compared to Jan. 2022, employment in Alberta was 0.9 per cent higher (99,400 jobs), and 0.8 per cent higher nationally (746,300 jobs).

“Last month, 20,600 new jobs were created, which is excellent news for Albertans looking for work. Alberta continues to attract more skilled workers to help fill vacancies in our diversified economy,” says Brian Jean, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Northern Development.

“Most of this job growth is coming from the private and services-producing sectors, including wholesale and retail trade, and professional, scientific and technical services. With the highest weekly earnings of all provinces, relatively affordable housing, and low taxes, Albertans are a step ahead when it comes to investing for their futures and building rewarding careers.”

Nationally, the economy added 150,000 jobs from December to January, a rise for the fifth straight month.
