Rebels lose 6-1 to Thunderbirds in high scoring third period

The Red Deer Rebels were shaken in the final period on Friday night, losing 6-1 against the Seattle Thunderbirds at the accesso ShoWare Centre in Kent, Washington.

The Rebels currently sit at 2-2 after their fourth U.S. road game.

There were no goals for either side in the first period and just one missed power play opportunity for the Thunderbirds. The American team outshot their northern neighbours 11-9 after 20 minutes.

The middle frame was equally scoreless with Seattle taking 13 shots on goal while Red Deer made five.

However, the game kicked into high gear in the final period when the Thunderbirds scored five goals in just over five minutes.

Seattle opened the scoring at 6:11 when Jared Davidson scored his 28th goal of the season on Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey. Assisted by Kevin Korchinski, the home team led 1-0.

Shortly after, when the Thunderbirds’ Dylan Guenther was sent to the box for tripping, the Rebels’ Kai Uchacz seized the power play opportunity on his former club’s goaltender Thomas Milic. His 40th goal this season was assisted by Ben King and Mats Lindgren, tying the game 1-1.

At 13:22, the Thunderbirds began their scoring spree. Jared Davidson scored his second goal of the game and 29th of the season. With the help of Kyle Crnkovic and Nolan Allan, Seattle regained their lead 2-1.

At 15:18, Seattle’s Nico Myatovic scored his 19th goal this season, assisted by Gracyn Sawchyn and Sam Popowich. The home team pushed their lead to 3-1.

Less than 30 seconds later, the Thunderbirds’ Brad Lambert scored his fifth goal of the season on the power play as Red Deer’s Hunter Mayo was given a penalty for delay of game. With Lucas Ciona and Dylan Guenther claiming the assists, the home team now lead 4-1.

Nearing the end of the period, Seattle’s Dylan Guenther scored his first goal of the WHL season at 17:05. With the help of Jeremy Hanzel and Brad Lambert, they pushed their lead to 5-1.

Finally, at 18:35, the Thunderbirds’ Nico Myatovic scored his second of the game and 20th goal of the season, as Nolan Allan and Gracyn Sawchyn made the assists. The final score read 6-1 Seattle.

The Thunderbirds outshot the Rebels 18-11 in the third period and 42-25 overall.

Red Deer went 1/3 on the power play while Seattle went 1/6 with the man advantage.

All three stars went to the Thunderbirds this game with goaltender Thomas Milic receiving the third star for saving 24 of 25 shots. Nico Myatovic earned the second star for his two goals this game while Jared Davidson was awarded the first star for scoring the first two goals for his team, including the eventual game winner.

Despite the loss, the Rebels still sit first in the Central Division with a record of 35-12-1-3 with 74 points, while the Thunderbirds also remain in first in the U.S. Division at 37-9-1-1 with 76 points.

The Rebels will play their final game of their five game road trip in the United States on Saturday, Feb. 11, against the Tri-City Americans at the Toyota Centre in Kennewick, Washington. Puck-drop is 7:05 p.m. MT with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND Radio.
