Crews respond to fatal house fire in Innisfail

Dec 22, 2022 | 5:34 PM

RCMP say a house fire Wednesday in Innisfail turned fatal.

Emergency crews responded just after midnight on Dec. 21 to a home on 47 Street in Innisfail.

Upon entering the home, a 77-year-old male was located, but sadly, police say, he succumbed to his injuries.

Following investigation, the fire has been deemed non-suspicious.

Innisfail Fire Chief Gary Leith says the fire began in the living room, and is believed to be related to an inappropriately placed supplementary heater.

Unfortunately, he says, the man was in bed and there was no working smoke alarm in the home.

“We’ve had two residential fires in the last 24 hours and neither of them had working smoke alarms,” he says.

“It’s a reminder for people to have those, because if for example you want extra heat, but something goes wrong, you’ll know to leave the property sooner and safely.”
