Alberta Sports Hall of Fame awards Queen’s Jubilee medals

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in Red Deer recently decided on several notable people whom it will award Queen’s Jubilee medals.

More than 7,000 Albertans will receive such a medal to mark the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

These Albertans are said to have made significant contributions to their province.

Hugh McPherson

Hugh served on many sports boards and committees in Red Deer and provincially with the Alberta Games programs. In Red Deer, Hugh served with the Games Foundation, the Games Society, the RD College Athletic Advisory Board, the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Board from 1981 to 1985, the Waskasoo Park Policy Committee, the 2019 Canada Winter Games Board of Directors, and Golf Canada’s Men’s Senior Championship. Hugh was inducted into the Alberts Sports Hall of Fame.

Neil Garbutt

Neil has a passion for giving back to sports. For over 60 years he has volunteered his time to multiple sports in the central zone. He was responsible for the creation of the Tiny Mites hockey tournament. One of his greatest accomplishment is the years he has dedicated to Special Olympics Bowling in Red Deer. The number of lives he has touched after 30+ years with the organization cannot be measured especially when he takes the time to give an award to each bowler for their unique accomplishments that year.

Barb McKee

Barb has been instrumental in developing sport and recreation in the City of Red Deer for the past two decades. Both through her job as Superintendent of Sport and Recreation with the City, and her numerous volunteer roles with sporting groups. There is rarely a sporting event in the city that Barb is not involved in. She played a critical role in the 2006 Alberta Summer Games, 2019 Canada Winter Games, the2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts and the IIHF World Juniors Hockey Tournament.

Marg Phelan

Marg has dedicated her life to her community and sports. She is heavily involved with the Sylvan Lake Sailing Club and the sport of sailing in Alberta. Marg was part of the bid committee for the 2006 Alberta Summer Games and the 2019 Canada Winter Games. She was also a long-time dedicated member of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors, having helped to secure its permanent location in Red Deer. Marg has chaired the annual induction ceremony since 2006 and continues to be a integral part of the event.

Hugh Kellough

Hugh’s contribution to sports in Alberta for the past 40 years is very impressive. He has been involved in baseball both in Stettler and Red Deer helping to build the minor baseball programs in both communities. High has also managed and coached minor hockey in Red Deer. His contribution to sports and the community did not stop there, he continues to give his time. Energy and sponsorship to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, Optimist Club of Red Deer and Agri Trade.

Donna Hateley

Donna has been giving back to sport for almost 30 years. She started with Freestyle Alberta as a parent 28 years ago and signed up as judge a year later. She is now a FIS A-Level World Cup Freestyle Skiing judge who has attended world cups around the globe. She has volunteered her time at numerous sporting events such as the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Donna also worked at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame for over 20 years, retiring as Managing Director in 2019.

Raymond Bennett

Ray began his hockey career with Innisfail Minor Hockey, and he has continued to share his passion for the sport. He has coached at all levels from minor hockey to the NHL with stops along with way to coach the Red Deer College Kings, Canadian National Junior team, and the 1998 Women’s Olympic team. But even through all hi success he continues to give back to the communities he is in and remembers his roots by bringing the Stanley Cup back to his hometown in the summer of 2022.

A ceremony to give the recipients their medals will be held next month.
