Alberta’s Environment and Protected Areas Minister Sonya Savage heads to Egypt for Climate Change Conference

Nov 8, 2022 | 1:04 PM

Environment and Protected Areas Minister Sonya Savage will be travelling to Egypt on Wednesday to represent the province of Alberta at the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (COP27).

Minister Savage is scheduled to travel to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to showcase Alberta’s achievements on emissions reductions and responsible resource development.

The province says these will include highlighting Alberta’s climate and energy policies aimed to balance the environment and energy security, their global leadership on innovative technology like carbon capture, utilization and storage, investments in hydrogen and critical and rare earth minerals, and key areas they say Alberta is delivering on such as lowering methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.

“I am proud to represent Alberta at COP27 to showcase the impressive environmental leadership an energy-producing jurisdiction is capable of. Having a seat at the table among world leaders gives us an opportunity to tell Alberta’s exciting story and to ensure our policies continue to attract the investment needed to protect the environment and bolster the economy,” said Savage.

Officials confirm Minister Savage will be attending COP27 with one ministerial staff, the deputy minister and three department staff from Environment and Protected Areas. The broader Alberta delegation is expected to include participation from industry, academia, investors, youth, non-governmental organizations and municipalities.

The Conference is deemed the world’s largest and most significant annual climate summit. COP27 takes place in Egypt from Nov. 6-18 and will feature discussions among heads of state, ministers, negotiators, activists, municipalities, civil society representatives and CEOs from around the world about global issues like greenhouse gas emissions and building resilience to a changing climate.

The Alberta government says they are committed to working with national and international partners to advance shared interests, like innovative technological development, that can lead to new opportunities for economic growth and lower emissions for communities and businesses in Alberta and around the world.
