The Red Deer Rebels tied a franchise record winning streak with their 14th consecutive win, 4-1, against the Swift Current Broncos Friday night at the InnovationPlex.

The first period left just a few unseized power play opportunities for both teams. It was the WHL debut for the Rebels’ Luke Vlooswyk who also received the first penalty of the evening for delay of game at 5:03.

After 20 minutes of play, the Rebels slightly outshot the Broncos 10-8 for an even 0-0 game.

Things picked up in the middle frame, however, when Swift Current received a double penalty at the halfway point. Caleb Wyrostok was sent to the box for kneeing while Rylan Gould was given a 10-minute misconduct. With a two man advantage, the Rebels’ Kai Uchacz scored his 12th goal of the season just over 30 seconds later on Broncos goaltender Reid Dyck. The power play goal was assisted by Christoffer Sedoff and Jayden Grubbe, putting the team on the board 1-0.

Another power play opportunity arose when the Broncos’ Caleb Wyrostok was sent to the box again, this time for roughing at 14:10. Red Deer’s Hunter Mayo then scored his seventh goal of the WHL season just six seconds later, with the help of Christoffer Sedoff and Kai Uchacz. The Rebels now lead 2-0.

The Broncos bucked back though at 17:23 as Josh Filmon scored his eighth goal of the season on Red Deer netminder Kyle Kelsey. Assisted by Matthew Ward, the score was now 2-1 for the Rebels.

The Rebels outshot the Broncos again in the second period 11-4 for a two -period total of 21-12 to that point.

In the final period, Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz grabbed the puck at the team’s blue line to swift past multiple Broncos’ before shooting a back-hander for his 13th goal of the season, unassisted at 6:51 to bring the team to a 3-1 lead.

Although Red Deer’s Frantisek Formanek later served a penalty for having too many men on the ice, he came out of the box to score his third goal of the season just eight seconds later at 13:03. From an intercepted pass, the Rebels’ Jace Weir shot the puck down the ice and off the boards where Formanek picked up the loose puck for a breakaway with no one around to challenge and scored on the play, pushing the team’s lead to 4-1.

After 60 minutes, the Rebels outshot the Broncos 20-8 in the third period and more than double overall (41-20).

The visitors went 2/8 on the power play while the home team went 0/5 with the man advantage.

Broncos’ goaltender Reid Dyck received the third star of the game while the Rebels earned the remaining two. Christoffer Sedoff received the second star for his two assists while Kai Uchacz earned the first star for his two goals and one assist on the evening.

The Rebels will continue their road journey against the Moose Jaw Warriors Saturday night at the Moose Jaw Events Centre starting at 7 p.m.
