Rebels make it 9 straight wins to start season

Oct 21, 2022 | 9:48 PM

The Red Deer Rebels extended their franchise record season-starting win streak to nine on Friday, knocking off the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-2.

A new record was set earlier this week when Red Deer made it eight wins, besting the previous franchise record of seven from 2000-01.

For those wondering, the WHL record for longest unbeaten streak to start a season belongs to the Brandon Wheat Kings, who went 29 games without a loss in 1978. That streak included one tie at the 11-game mark.

The Winnipeg Ice won 11 straight last season, second only to the 1988-89 Swift Current Broncos who won 12 straight.

On this night, the win looked to be in doubt early as the hometown Tigers got off to a great start.

Cayden Lindstrom (3rd) scored at 6:25 of the first, which was followed by another by Lindstrom (4th) just two minutes and 32 seconds later.

But before the opening frame was done, Red Deer climbed to within one, Jayden Grubbe (3rd) scoring on the power play. Ben King and Christoffer Sedoff got the assists at 10:08.

Just 4:46 into the second, King (5th) tied things up, Kalan Lind and Jhett Larson assisting.

After 40 minutes, the game was tied at two goals apiece.

In the final period, it was all Red Deer on the scoresheet.

Matteo Fabrizi (2nd), with Jace Weir and Craig Armstrong getting helpers, scored the eventual game-winner at 4:45.

Talon Brigley (1st) got the insurance marker, with Frantisek Formanek and Ollie Josephson assisting, at 9:32.

Between the pipes, the Rebels’ Kyle Kelsey stopped 19 of 21 shots for his eighth win of the young season. Kelsey now sports an impressive 1.87 GAA and .936 SV%, stopping 221 of 236 shots in his eight victories. They also include one shutout.

Red Deer outshot Med Hat 29-21, and went 1/4 with the man advantage. The Tigers were held scoreless on five power play opportunities.
