Park has another strong tournament, several locals readying for Canadian Men’s Amateur

Red Deer’s Eileen Park finished T23 at +11 at this week’s 67th Canadian Junior Girls Championship — held at The Marshes Golf Club in Ottawa.

Just 13, Park shot rounds of 76-74-72-77, 22 strokes behind Brokenshire Trophy winner Yeji Kwon, who’s three years older and joins Brooke Henderson on the prestigious list of the tournament’s champions.

Park’s score was good enough for a 15th place finish in the Juvenile division.

Park recently won the Alberta Golf U19 Championship, which qualified her to compete in Ottawa.

Meantime. several central Alberta golfers are gearing up for the 117th Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, taking place at Point Grey Golf & Country Club and Seymour Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.

The tournament has a long history, first being contested in 1895.

Among this year’s participants are Red Deer’s Alex Gerard, Lacombe’s Brady McKinlay, Sylvan Lake’s Carter Graf, Chase Broderson of Lacombe, Cole Bergheim of Red Deer, Logan Graf of Sylvan Lake, and Tom McKinlay Jr. of Lacombe.

The tournament for the Earl Grey Cup starts August 1, with the winner earning an exemption into the 2023 RBC Canadian Open and 2022 U.S. Amateur Championship.
