Amidst news of the cancellation of the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Edmonton and Red Deer Wednesday, the Red Deer Rebels made it known that hockey isn’t over yet in Canada with an epic 8-6 win against the Prince Albert Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre.

Just 25 seconds into the first period, the Rebels’ Blake Stevenson scored his 10th goal of the season on goaltender Cole Tisdale, assisted by Jace Weir.

With the Raiders’ Tyson Laventure in the box for high sticking, the Rebels doubled their lead when Ben King scored his whopping 22nd goal of the season at the 7:20 mark. Arshdeep Bains and Christoffer Sedoff assisted on the power play goal which brought the score to 2-0.

But Prince Albert showed they weren’t going to let a slow start ruin their night. With 35 seconds left in the period, Sloan Stanick scored his 10th goal of the season on netminder Chase Wutzke, assisted by Ozzy Wiesblatt and Remy Aquilon.

While the score was 2-1 in favor of the Rebels, the Raiders slightly outshot Red Deer 9-7.

The second period was no less exciting than the first, with Red Deer’s Kalan Lind scoring his seventh goal this season at the 2:24 mark. He was assisted by Kyle Masters and Matteo Fabrizi and made the score 3-1.

Just over two minutes later, Jhett Larson scored his eighth goal of the season with help from Liam Keeler, bringing the score to 4-1.

With the Rebels’ Ben King in the box for high sticking, Prince Albert seized the man advantage opportunity at the 7:45 mark with Hayden Pakkala scoring his fifth goal of the season. Assisted by Ozzy Wiesblatt and Cole Sanders, the power play goal brought the score to 4-2, and still in favor of the Rebels.

Then with Red Deer’s Ben King in the box once again, this time for tripping, the Rebels scored at the halfway mark of the period with Jace Isley’s fifth goal of the season. The short handed goal increased the Rebels lead to 5-2.

The Raiders ended the period on a positive note, however, as Vladislav Shilo scored his first ever goal in the WHL at 16:12, assisted by Tyson Laventure and Lendon Kosior.

At the end of the second, shots on goal were 17-14 in favour of the Raiders, with the scoreboard reading 5-3 Red Deer.

The final period almost turned the game completely around as Prince Albert began to catch up, scoring at 3:34 with Sloan Stanick’s 11th goal of the season and second in the game. Assisted by Ozzy Wiesblatt again and Carson Latimer, the score was now 5-4.

Red Deer did not take their slight lead for granted though, scoring less than a minute later with Liam Keeler’s 10th goal this season. Now a lead of 6-4, the goal was assisted by Blake Stevenson.

To further solidify the win, the Rebels’ Carter Anderson scored his sixth goal of the season, once again assisted by Blake Stevenson and Liam Keeler. By the 6:15 mark, the score was 7-4 for the Rebels.

Red Deer’s Blake Stevenson ended his team’s dominance as he started it, with another goal at 8:31, his 11th this season which brought the game to 8-4.

Prince Albert’s Vladislav Shilo not only debuted his first goal of the season this game, but earned himself a hat-trick in the final period. At 17:21, he scored his second goal of the game and the season, assisted by Tyson Laventure, and bringing the score to 8-5.

With Red Deer’s Matteo Fabrizi sent to the box for holding, Shilo then scored his first power play goal and third goal this season at 18:38. Assisted by Carson Latimer and Nolan Allan, the game ended 8-6 in favor of the Rebels.

The Raiders outshot the Rebels 15-13 in the third period for a three-period total of 41-34 in favour of PA.

The Raiders also went 2/8 with the man advantage, while Red Deer went 1/3 on the power play.

The third star went to three time goal scorer, Vladislav Shilo of the Raiders, while the second star went to the Rebels’ Liam Keeler who earned one goal and two assists. The first star went to Red Deer’s Blake Stevenson for his two goals and two assists.

The win brings the Rebels’ record to 22-9-1-1, while the loss leaves the Raiders with a record of 12-6-1-1.

Red Deer will play its final game of the year in Moose Jaw against the Warriors this Friday, Dec. 31 at the Mosaic Place at 6 p.m. MT.
