Charges withdrawn for Penhold man charged in Red Deer anti-racism rally

Charges have been withdrawn for a Penhold man accused in a pair of altercations that took place during an anti-racism demonstration in Red Deer last year.

Two charges of assault against Trevor Lyle Roy, 43, were withdrawn in Red Deer provincial court on Dec. 21. The charges were in relation to two separate incidents that occurred on the same day regarding the same event.

Red Deer RCMP said their investigation into what happened at the Sept. 20, 2020 anti-racism event at Rotary Recreation Park revealed three separate assaults took place.

Roy’s charges stemmed from an incident prior to the start of the rally and the other for a second incident while the event was underway.

Defence lawyer Kevin Sproule confirms that Roy was previously approved by the Crown for participation in the Adult Alternative Measures program, noting Roy completed that program, allowing for the charges to be withdrawn.

Meanwhile, Taylor McNallie of Calgary stands charged with assault with a weapon for an incident at the rally.

She has pleaded not guilty and previously had a trial scheduled for Nov. 3 in Red Deer. It has been rescheduled to Feb. 18, 2022.
