Red Deer Rebel Kalan Lind is rejoining his teammates this week after recently taking part in the 2021 Capital City Challenge in Ottawa.

The four team tournament featured the National Women’s Team, and three men’s U17 teams (Team Canada Red, Team Canada White and Team Canada Black).

Suiting up for Team Canada White on the tournament’s opening day Nov. 26, Lind scored once in a 7-3 victory over the National Women’s Team.

On Nov. 30, Lind scored twice, including once on the power play, in a 6-2 loss to Team Canada Red.

“I thought I competed hard, and I thought my linemates made a lot of good plays,” said the Shaunavon, SK native. “All over the ice, we had some good chemistry, and obviously Andrew [Cristall] made some great passes to me that I was able to bury in the net. I wanted to keep competing, throw my body around and do everything I could to help the team.”

“I blocked some shots in the third period and wanted to help us even up the game,” added Lind. “But unfortunately we did not get the result we wanted.”

Then in the bronze medal game Dec. 1, Lind assisted along with Mathieu Cataford on a goal by Andrew Cristall to put his team up 3-0 enroute to a 6-1 win over the National Women’s Team.

Meantime, Red Deer native Harrison Lodewyk, a member of the Prince Albert Raiders, contributed some offence for Team Canada Red during the Capital City Challenge.

On Nov. 27, Lodewyk scored once in a 7-0 shutout victory over the National Women’s Team.

“I am starting to feel more confident,” said Lodewyk following the game. “I feel like I am getting into a good rhythm and have been able to shake off a bit of the nerves of playing in a big tournament like this, and I hope I can continue to build off my goal tonight as we move forward. It is pretty cool to be able to play against a team that will be playing in the Olympics.”

“Everyone in Canada knows Marie-Philip Poulin, so it was a fun experience to be able to play against players like that,” added Lodewyk.

The 2021 Capital City Challenge wrapped up on Dec. 1 with Team Canada White capturing the bronze medal following a 6-1 win over the National Women’s Team, while Team Canada Black won gold after a 5-4 overtime win over Team Canada Red.

Elsewhere, Olds native Ronan Seeley, a member of the WHL’s Everett Silvertips, has been added to a roster of 35 players who have earned an invitation to Canada’s National Junior Team selection camp, set for Dec. 9-12 in Calgary.

The players, including three goaltenders, 11 defencemen and 21 forwards, will compete for a chance to represent Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer.

Canada’s National Junior Team selection camp will be held at the WinSport Arena at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. It will include practices and two games against a team of U SPORTS all-stars on Dec. 11 and 12 before the team heads to Banff for a training camp, Dec. 14-19.

Dr. Barry Wiens, Red Deer Rebels team physician, will also be Team Canada’s team physician for the tournament.

The 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship begins on Boxing Day with Canada kicking off its tournament schedule against the Czech Republic.

In addition to its opening-night match-up, Canada will also play Austria on Dec. 28, Germany on Dec. 29 and Finland on Dec. 31 to wrap up preliminary-round action.

All Team Canada games will be played at 5 p.m. MT/7 p.m. ET.
