Rebels edge Oil Kings in Edmonton

After splitting a home and home series with the Calgary Hitmen, the Red Deer Rebels finished off their three-game weekend with a 2-1 win over the Oil Kings in Edmonton Sunday.

The Oil Kings struck first in the game when Carson Latimer got the puck past Rebels netminder Connor Ungar at 5:13 of the opening period to give Edmonton the 1-0 lead. Assists came courtesy of Jacob Boucher and Tyler Horstmann. It was Latimer’s first goal of the season and the only goal of the opening frame.

Red Deer went 0/2 on the power play in the opening 20 minutes, while Edmonton went 0/1. The Oil Kings outshot the Rebels 6-4 in the first period.

In the second, Red Deer evened things up at 1-1 when Jace Weir scored from the edge of the Edmonton goal crease, beating Oil Kings goaltender Sebastian Cossa at the 2:00 mark, with the assist coming from Jhett Larson for Weir’s third goal of the season.

The Rebels then took the lead later in the period when Ben King slapped a one-timer from the top of the face-off circle to make it 2-1 Red Deer. The goal was King’s third of the season and came on the power play at 15:09 following a tripping penalty to Edmonton’s Carson Latimer. Assists came from Christoffer Sedoff and Blake Stevenson.

The period ended with the Rebels going 1/4 on the power play to that point, while the Oil Kings were 0/3 on the power play after 40 minutes. Edmonton outshot Red Deer 15-7 in the second period for a two period shot total of 21-11 in favour of the Oil Kings.

Neither team was able to score in the third period, leaving the Rebels with a 2-1 victory over the Oil Kings at Rogers Place.

The game finished with Red Deer going 1/5 on the power play, while Edmonton went 0/4. Shots were 9-7 in favour of the Oil Kings in the third period and finished 30-18 in favour of Edmonton.

The game’s first star went to Red Deer’s goaltender Connor Ungar who saved 29 of 30 shots for a .967 save percentage.

The second star was the Rebels Ben King who scored the team’s go-ahead goal in the second period, which turned out to be the eventual game winner.

The game’s third star was Edmonton’s Carson Latimer, who scored the Oil Kings only goal of the game.

The win improves Red Deer’s record to 4-3-1 on the season, tied for first place in the WHL’s Central Division with Edmonton who has one game in hand. The Oil Kings drop to 4-2-0-1 on the season.

The Rebels next action is Friday, Oct. 22 when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes. It’s a 7:00 p.m. face-off at the Peavey Mart Centrium.
