Persons Case Scholarship now taking applications

Oct 16, 2021 | 10:55 AM

Applications for the Persons Case Scholarship are now open, the Government of Alberta announced Friday.

Established for the Persons Case’s 50th anniversary in 1979, the scholarship commemorates the Famous Five and a historic court decision confirming that women were to be considered ‘persons’ in Canadian law.

Originally dubbed the ‘Alberta Five,’ the Famous Five are better known as judge Emily Murphy, Henrietta Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby.

The scholarship in their honour is open to students of all genders in the arts, humanities and social sciences fields whose work advances gender equality, or who are studying in fields where their gender is under-represented.
