The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting near Rocky Mountain House.

Members of Rocky Mountain House RCMP are said to have responded at about 12:20 a.m. on Aug. 14 to an allegedly armed male with a hostage in a rural area, approximately 10 km west of Sunchild and O’Chiese First Nation.

RCMP conducted a search of the area for a male suspect, who was believed to be from the Edmonton area. Mounties were joined by members of the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Service.

While attempting to locate the suspect, RCMP were advised by Edmonton Police Service that the male was also a suspect in a suspicious death which had occurred at 93 Street and 111 Avenue in the capital city. That investigation, which Edmonton Police say involves a deceased female, is continuing.

Meantime, the suspect was located and a confrontation occurred between RCMP and the male. This resulted in an officer discharging their firearm, ultimately killing the suspect.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and all those affected by this event,” RCMP say.

No officers sustained injuries.

“The RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable,” adds RCMP in a statement. “This is why, as soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately notified the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated our internal review process. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actions of the police during this investigation.”
