Red Deer’s active cases now below start of record third wave

Red Deer is down to 84 active cases of COVID-19 as of Thursday, according to the latest numbers from the province.

That’s down 11 from Wednesday’s total of 95. Going back to March 16 when there were 93, the city is now below the start of a local third wave which spent eight weeks climbing to a record 911 active cases at its peak on May 8 (visualization below).

Recoveries are up 15 to 5,612 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer rose four to 5,736.

Red Deer’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 remains 40, with the last one reported May 31.

According to the provincial vaccination map, 56,933 people in Red Deer have received one dose of vaccine, while 24,470 are fully vaccinated.

The Central Zone as a whole has 284 active cases as of Thursday, down 30, with 24 hospitalizations, down two, and four receiving intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital, down one. The Central Zone has had 164 deaths linked to COVID-19, including one today.

Across Alberta, another 150 cases of COVID-19 were announced Thursday out of 6,044 test results for a positivity rate of ~2.5 per cent.

Active cases across the province are down to 2,471, a one-day decrease of 168.

There are 242 Albertans hospitalized due to the virus, down 13, including 58 in intensive care, down nine.

Two new deaths linked to COVID-19 were reported in the past day to bring the province’s total to 2,280.

As of June 16, 3,583,406 doses have been administered in Alberta. 69.9 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12-plus have now received at least one dose, and 24.2 per cent are fully vaccinated with two doses.
