Red Deer PCN Women’s Aloha Fun Run still a go this weekend

May 6, 2021 | 12:32 PM

Central Albertans have the chance this weekend to celebrate women and families during the 10th and final Women’s Fun Run, presented by the Red Deer Primary Care Network and in support of the Mustard Seed’s School Lunch Program.

This year’s event takes place on May 8, and is in an all-new format with an ALOHA theme.

Officials suggest it’s the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend with the special people in your life. All ages, genders and abilities are welcome.

However, in light of new public health measures announced this week, event organizers have noted some changes to the original plans.

Fun Run will not be hosting start locations.

“Our original plan for each of our start locations required crews of volunteers to set up tents, tables and porta-potties, to mark and marshal the routes, and to check in and assist participants,” reads a statement from event organizers. “It is clear that this is now neither possible or advisable. As a result, all participants will be encouraged to complete their walk/run at a time & place of their choosing.”

Officials say no check-in or schedule will be required, and participants are free to choose a time, date, route and weather forecast that works best for them.

All routes, however, will still be marked.

“Our volunteer crew have already been out marking turns and turnaround points for all of our routes using temporary enviro-friendly markings on the trails/grass,” the statement continues. “All of these trails are open to the public, and if you wish, you may choose to complete your walk/run on any of these routes at any time. You may also choose to create your own route instead.”

Route maps will remain on the event’s website as additional guidance, and will also have large maps at package pickup showing the routes.

“We do have photographers excited to take pics of all of you being active in your Hawaiian best! To help us capture the day, please take a few snaps and send them in to us,” reads the statement. “We will be drawing for awesome ALOHA prizes from everyone who sends us their pictures.”

Picture can be sent through social media using hashtag #aloharun2021 or by email at info@womensfunrun.com.

Although over 1,300 people have already registered for the event, registration will remain open until Friday night (May 7).

All participants will receive a potted plant from Blue Grass Garden Center, a custom race bib, swag and entry into draw prizes. Package pickup for t-shirts, bags, plants and other swag will be at the Westerner on May 7.

Officials say over $48,000 has already been raised for the Mustard Seed School Lunch Program, with a special shout-out also going out to participants in the Mustard Seed’s Hawaiian Hula Dash Challenge, who together have raised well over $20,000.
