St. Joseph High School suspends in-person classes for two weeks

In-person classes at St. Joseph High School in Red Deer have been suspended for the next two weeks.

Kathleen Finnigan, Superintendent for Red Deer Catholic Regional School, says the move is due to the large portion of the school’s student (64%) and staff (42%) population currently in quarantine due to COVID-19.

“In collaboration with Alberta Education, we were granted a short term operational shift to at-home learning for St. Joseph High School from January 25, 2021 – February 5, 2021 and returning to in-person learning on February 8, 2021,” Finnigan explained in a letter sent to parents Sunday.

According to the website Support our Students, St. Joseph High School has had three cases of COVID-19 this month (all reported between Jan. 22-23) and seven cases since the start of the school year.

“As we progress toward the beginning of the second semester we wanted to remind our school community of the importance of limiting social contact not only while at school, but also outside of school hours,” Finnigan wrote. “We are closely watching the impact of COVID-19 cases in our province, but we need your help.”

Finnigan said school staff will be in touch with families about at-home learning at the beginning of next week.
