Partnership Dissolved

Town, County, and Village going separate ways in waste management

Jan 22, 2021 | 11:32 AM

The Town of Rocky Mountain House, Clearwater County, and the Village of Caroline have agreed that the Rocky Mountain Regional Solid Waste Authority (RMRSWA) has not been meeting the needs of each municipality and has now been dissolved.

The County noted the reason for the dissolution of the RMRSWA was due to the very different approach and vision each municipality had toward solid waste management.

Effective Jan. 31, the Rocky Transfer Station will be permanently closed.

Residents of Clearwater County will be able to dispose of recyclable materials at the Temporary Central Transfer Station located just north of Rocky Mountain House.

However, because of the limited recycling being offered in the County, any of its residents wishing to recycle more, are being asked to contact the Town of Rocky to use their new Eco-Centre.

It is still being determined whether the Town will charge non-residents to use the Eco-Centre.

Large bulk loads and some recyclable materials such as mixed paper and corrugated cardboard can still be to taken to the Regional Landfill and the Rural Transfer Stations.

Anyone from the Town of Rocky or Village of Caroline taking garbage to these locations will need to pay a disposal fee, the amount of which is still being determined.

Due to the possible increase of usage at the Regional Landfill and the Rural Transfer Stations, the County is reviewing whether or not to extend the current 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekday hours of operation.

Clearwater citizens will use a Residential Identification Card to access the landfill and transfer station, to help eliminate unlimited and unaccountable waste disposal which can present a significant cost to ratepayers.
