A COVID-19 outbreak has now been declared for Hunting Hills High School after three students tested positive for the virus.

The first case was reported last week on Oct. 8. Two more cases were reported Wednesday (Oct. 14).

According to the Alberta Health website, an outbreak is declared when there are two or more confirmed COVID-19 cases in a school setting within a 14-day period where disease could have been acquired or transmitted in the school.

“The initial student was deemed to be non-infectious while at school, the other two showed no symptoms while at school but have tested positive,” Hunting Hills Principal Darwin Roscoe shared in an email to parents Wednesday evening. “Any students or staff who shared a classroom or learning space with these individuals were called by the school late Monday evening and notified that they were required to self-isolate.”

Roscoe said AHS has not confirmed the source of transmission but a school investigation points to activities on a weekend as the most likely source of transmission.

“We are working with Alberta Health Services Environmental Inspector to reaffirm the fact that the practices and the safety measures we have in place protect our school community members.”

Also on Wednesday, École Secondaire Notre Dame High School notified parents of the first case of COVID-19 diagnosed in an individual from the school.

“Alberta Health Services (AHS) has advised us that this individual was not infectious while at school and consequently students and staff in the classes of the infected person will not be required to isolate,” Principal Rose McQuay said in a letter to parents. “By following the correct protocol and staying home when sick, our students will continue their learning as per normal.”

McQuay added that officials with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools are now working with AHS to identify non-classroom related close contacts and implement measures that need to be taken by those affected.

Two other schools in Red Deer, Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and Escuela Vista Grande, each reported single cases of COVID-19 in September and have since reported no further cases.
