Evansburg’s Thrive Community Garden celebrates grand opening

Jul 23, 2020 | 9:18 AM

Yellowhead County Mayor Jim Eglinski and Councillor Cherniawsky-Voigtwere on hand on July 10 to mark the 4th Grand Opening of the Thrive Community Garden and to appreciate the fruit of local gardeners’ labour.

The Thrive Community Garden was created by the Thrive Committee, an Evansburg Areabased group who are working hard to deliver community-focused initiatives that improve locals’ health outcomes.

With a grant in tow, the committee set its sights on developing a lot in Evansburg into a blossoming community garden and common social space. Since its inception in 2017, the lot has expanded from 6 to 19 plots, and includes a communal area with strawberry plants, raspberry bushes, and cherry trees.

The community garden has been previously overseen by the Lobstick Literacy and Learning Society, but due to shifting mandates and capacity, Yellowhead County has taken over the day-to-day management of the garden for 2020.

Community gardens are important in that they can be financially accessible sources of fresh produce and encourage people to be involved in the production of their own food.

Researchers have also found that community gardens “…give rise to a range of social processes, including social connections, reciprocity, mutual trust, collective decision-making, civic engagement and community building.” (E. Tieg et. al, 2009).

Yellowhead County is proud to support this initiative meant to strengthen community bonds and individuals’ health in Evansburg.
