Winners drawn in 2020 Red Deer Hospital Lottery

Jul 10, 2020 | 2:21 PM

The 2020 Hospital Lottery in support of the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation is officially in the books.

This year’s proceeds are going towards the purchase of ventilators to replace an aging inventory at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.

On Friday, the foundation drew its grand prize winners, including for a huge Mega Bucks 50/50 jackpot, and a dream home in Red Deer’s Laredo neighbourhood.

The winner of this year’s $870,000 home at 121 Larratt Close is Debby Irwin of Stettler.

“For a couple years we’ve supported the lottery. They want to do an expansion and they’re trying to raise funds so I thought it would be a great place to put some money,” says Irwin, who admits she’s still dumbfounded a while after receiving the call that she’d won.

“If something was wrong with our health, Red Deer is where we’d go to, so that’s why we support the Red Deer Hospital and the foundation. We haven’t had to go there, but my daughter had her two babies there in the last few years.”

Irwin and her husband are getting close to retirement, so they’ll likely move in eventually, she notes.

Meantime, Trevor Greenlee of Red Deer is more than $371,000 richer after his name was drawn for the Mega Bucks.

“That’s awesome. I’ve never won anything like this before,” an astounded Greenlee said over the phone at the draw. “I might help my kids out. I have two kids and one grandson; they both have mortgages, so we’ll work it out. I’m 73, I’ve got a good pension, but I know I’ll have a use for it.”

The final numbers for how much the lottery raised and how many ventilators will be purchased aren’t in yet, but RDRHF CEO Manon Therriault expressed her gratitude to everyone who bought a ticket.

“With COVID-19 and everything shut down, we were only selling tickets online, so we anticipated some challenges and were expecting to require an extension, but we didn’t need one this year,” she said. “That really shows how much people truly care about our community and health care. Ticket sales were great and we were able to double the Mega Bucks this year.”

A full list of winners will be posted to RedDeerHospitalLottery.ca by Monday, July 13.
