Semi seized, charges laid after ‘dangerous’ house move on QEII

A total of 40 charges were laid after a semi-truck came close to losing the mobile home it was hauling on the QEII Highway near Red Deer last month.

Alberta Sheriffs said members of their Highway Patrol received “multiple complaints” regarding a semi hauling a double-wide mobile home travelling north on the highway on the night of June 17.

“The transport unit had reportedly almost caused several collisions and was at risk of losing its load,” sheriffs said in a release.

Responding officers were concerned about the lack of proper signage and lights on the semi, the mobile home and a pilot truck that was following the transport unit. Sheriffs noted that a storm happening at the time was “making an already dangerous situation even more hazardous by reducing visibility for other motorists.”

Sheriffs intercepted the transport unit near the 67 Street overpass and escorted the drivers to the weigh scales on Edgar Industrial Drive in Red Deer. That’s where officers found several violations, including the fact that neither driver had an operator’s licence with them, none of the vehicles had insurance, all the vehicles were missing licence plates, and the semi had expired registration. A total of 40 charges were laid and court dates were set in Red Deer.

The semi, trailer, mobile home and pilot truck were all seized and towed.

“Officers were relieved they were able to intercept and remove the hazardous transport unit from the highway before any incidents could occur,” sheriffs said.
