With Stage 2 of Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy now underway, plans are being made for the re-opening of some popular local recreation facilities.

The Town of Blackfalds says it is implementing a ‘soft’ open of facilities and amenities.

The Border Paving Fitness Centre, Cottonwood Meadows Running Track and the Field House at the Abbey Centre will open on Friday, June 19 with the conditions in place.

Of note, the facility is open exclusively to Abbey Centre members and Blackfalds residents (including Lacombe County). Tow officials say proof of residency will be required.

In Sylvan Lake, the NexSource Centre is set to re-open on July 5.

“Some areas within the facility will remain closed in alignment with regulations set forth by the province,” according to the Sylvan Lake Recreation & Culture Facebook page. “This means that the NAL Resources Children’s Play Space and the hot tub in the swimming pool will remain closed for now; there will also be restrictions in other areas of the facility and other programs may be affected.”

In Lacombe, city officials say the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre remains closed to the public due to temporary layoffs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The City is working quickly to recall staff, design programming, and get the facility ready for public access,” said Director of Community Services Deborah Juch, “We hope to reopen pool on July 15 with limited programming; however, I am delighted to inform residents that the spray park will open the end of this month, with restrictions to ensure the health and safety of staff and patrons.”

The Lacombe Spray Park, located at the south side of the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre (5429 53 Street), will reopen open to the public on Monday, June 29 with additional measures in place. Patrons are advised to bring their own chairs, and to pack hand sanitizer along with their sunscreen. Operating hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends and statutory holiday.

The Town of Ponoka is also beginning work on plans to re-open its various facilities.
