Campers need to follow rules as May Long Weekend nears

Clearwater County council recently relayed local residents’ feelings towards the current fire bans for those on both sides, some seeking additional area closures and individuals who believe the ban should be lifted entirely.

Communication Coordinator for the county Djurdjica Tutic says that they intend to continue to align with provincial directions in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that public safety is paramount.

The province as well as the county are bracing for the upcoming May Long Weekend, which according to Tutic can see up to 10,000 to 20,000 visitors flock to local campgrounds.

“Impacts for influx of visitors include both provincial and municipal resources requirements in terms of enforcement, emergency response services and hospital services,” Tutic explains.

The county recently sent a letter to Minister of Environment & Parks Jason Nixon looking to confirm the province’s plans for private and random camping for the upcoming long weekend, and to ensure their messaging is consistent with the province’s recommendations.

Nixon’s press secretary, Jess Sinclair, says they will be removing vehicle access restrictions and opening some boat launches as part of the government’s phased relaunch plan for Alberta’s economy.

“Not all services will be open right away while we ramp-up staffing. Washrooms and garbage pick-up aren’t available yet and opening our campgrounds is still a few weeks away.”

She notes that people can expect their outdoor experiences to be different due to COVID-19, so they are reminding anyone who plans to go out camping to frequently check the Alberta Parks website as things can change quickly.

“We recognize many Albertans want to get outside, but we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, so we’re encouraging anyone visiting our parks and public land for recreation purposes to make sure you’re always following public health guidelines,” Sinclair said in relation to social distancing rules and groups no larger than 15 still being in effect.

“Although we’re easing restrictions, we really need everyone’s cooperation to ensure we don’t have to bring them back.”
