Modulars to help ease space crunch at Catholic schools in Sylvan Lake

Apr 15, 2020 | 1:22 PM

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools has announced that École Our Lady of the Rosary School in Sylvan Lake will be receiving two modular classrooms this summer.

The district says these modulars will allow the school to become Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 4. École Mother Teresa School will be shifting to Grade 5-9 as of September 2020, providing more classroom availability and allowing for more flexibility in overall timetabling of students and teachers in instructional spaces.

“Both our schools in Sylvan Lake are fully populated. École Our Lady of the Rosary School has the capacity to add modulars on to the footprint of their land. École Mother Teresa School does not have usable land for any type of additions,” explained Trustee Dorraine Lonsdale with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools. “We are thankful that the government gave approval for two additional modulars so class adjustments can be made to alleviate some of the pressure of limited spatial growth at École Mother Teresa School.”

“We are very excited about the allocation of modulars to our school. We look forward to having Grade 4 students in our school. As our oldest students, they will become our leaders. As our school continues to grow, we look forward to the many opportunities and blessings,” said Principal, Rob Coumont at École Our Lady of the Rosary School.

“The granting of modulars to École Our Lady of the Rosary School and the move of Grade 4 from École Mother Teresa School is a celebration for the success and growth of Catholic education in Sylvan Lake. With success comes times of transition, in this case, staff will be transitioning from École Mother Teresa School to École Our Lady of the Rosary School. Staff that have been invaluable to the story, team and culture that École Mother Teresa School has within its walls will be leaving us. We have been blessed to have the opportunity to work in a team between our two schools and we look forward to the new opportunities that our growth will provide for our staff and students,” said Principal, Shane Chisholm at École Mother Teresa School.

Included in the district’s Three-Year Capital Plan is a request to Alberta Education for a new Kindergarten – Grade 5 school in Sylvan Lake by 2025.
