A pair of RDC Queens hockey players have been recognized for their prowess both on and off the ice.

Forward Camryn Wallan has been named the 2019-20 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Hockey Top Scholastic Achiever, as an Academic All-Canadian with the highest GPA.

Wallan and teammate Ashley Sutherland became Academic All-Canadians when they were selected to the All-Conference team and achieved academic honours. Throughout the year they both demonstrated their commitment and success to their studies and athletic performance.

Wallan, a Bachelor of Education Elementary student, earned a spot on the ACAC Women’s Hockey Second All-Conference team. Sutherland, a Bachelor of Kinesiology student, was designated an ACAC Women’s Hockey First All-Conference team selection.

The two hard-working and talented student-athletes held leadership roles as alternate captains this year. They helped guide the Red Deer College Queens (15-6-3-0) to second place in the standings. Then they both played pivotal roles in the Queens pushing the NAIT Ooks to double-overtime in the third game of the best-of-three semi-final.

Wallan, a third-year, contributed five goals, nine assists and 14 points during the regular season. The versatile player ranked third on the RDC Queens and 13th in the ACAC, and played in all situations. Wallan, who is from Beaverlodge, struck twice on the power play and recorded three game-winners. In the playoffs, she used her speed to effectively kill penalties and apply a determined forecheck.

Sutherland impressively led all ACAC defenders in points and finished fifth among all skaters. The second-year played well at both ends of the ice and led the Queens with ten assists and 18 points. The Bachelor of Kinesiology student scored eight goals, tying Avery Lajeunesse for the team lead. Two of those were game-winners and four were on the power play, which led the squad. In the semi-finals, Sutherland recorded four points in only three games, including a game-winning goal.

The dedicated learners excelled academically while successfully managing their responsibilities as team leaders and role models for youth.
