Calgary Flames change plans, announce assistance program for employees

Mar 16, 2020 | 5:48 AM

CALGARY- The Calgary Flames ownership group has decided to assist part-time arena event workers who have lost shifts due to the NHL pausing the season due to COVID-19.

The Flames had sent an email to arena staff that said they would only get paid for a shift if they had not received the legally required 24 hours of notice.

There was a public backlash and former employee Raymond Lau set up an online fundraising campaign for affected workers that quickly reached tens of thousands of dollars.

John Bean, CEO of Calgary Sports and Entertainment, says in a statement that the Flames organization will provide an income bridge support program for qualifying employees.
