National bronze for RDC Queens volleyball squad

The RDC Queens are national bronze medalists after winning their final game at the CCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships in Quebec this weekend.

RDC defeated the Fanshawe Falcons three sets to one (25-14, 25-17, 18-25, 25-21) to earn the top three finish. The event went on at Cegep Garneau in Quebec City despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Notably, the Queens lost to Fanshawe on day one of the tournament, a 3-2 result.

In the Saturday night game with hardware on the line, Red Deer’s offence was on fire, as Erin Neufeldt, Tess Pearman and Emma Holmes led the team with more than 60 per cent of their overall kills.

Holmes was named to the second all-star team, and teammate Alexandria Greenshie was name to the first all-star team.

Kaylee Domoney received player of the game in the bronze medal match, while it was Emma Letkman who notched 34 assists.

Earlier in the day, Red Deer College defeated fellow ACAC member Briercrest in the bronze semi-final, three sets to two. RDC also defeated Lynx d’Edouard-Montpetit three sets to two on Friday giving them an overall tournament record of 3-1.

For the Queens volleyball program, it is their 18th medal at the CCAA championship, and sixth bronze. Last month, the Queens earned silver at the ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championships.

Taking gold on Saturday were the Vancouver Island University Mariners, who defeated the home team Élans de Garneau three sets to one.
