RDC encourages awareness of Indigenous Culture and Social Justice at upcoming events

Mar 11, 2020 | 9:56 AM

RED DEER- RDC invites community members to attend two upcoming events hosted by its Indigenous Student Services department and community partners.

The Free Film Screening of “nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up” on Friday, March 13 at the RDC Arts Centre. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. with the film screening beginning at 5:15 p.m.

A moderated discussion with Jade Tootoosis, a family member of the late Colten Boushie, whose life and death is featured in this film, will follow the screening.

On August 9, 2016, a young Cree man named Colten Boushie died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head after entering Gerald Stanley’s rural property with his friends.

The jury’s subsequent acquittal of Stanley captured international attention, raising questions about racism embedded within Canada’s legal system and propelling Colten’s family to national and international stages in their pursuit of justice.

Ddirected by Tasha Hubbard, “nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up” weaves a profound narrative encompassing the filmmaker’s own adoption, the stark history of colonialism on the Prairies, and a vision of a future where Indigenous children can live safely on their homelands.

You can register online to attend this event.

A Red Deer Community Round Dance will be held on Friday, March 20 at RDC’s Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre Gymnasium starting at 6 p.m.

Drumming and other activities will be held until midnight to celebrate spring, a time of renewal. This is a family-friendly event, and attendees can drop-in at any time during the festivities.

Attendees can enjoy the evening by joining the dancing, listening to Indigenous drumming, or simply watching, and learning from, this immersive cultural experience.

Red Deer College recognizes that our campus is situated on Treaty 7 land, the traditional territory of the Blackfoot, Tsuu T’ina and Stoney Nakoda peoples, and that the central Alberta region we serve falls under Treaty 6, traditional Métis, Cree and Saulteaux territory.

We honour the First Peoples who have lived here since time immemorial, and we give thanks for the land where RDC sits. This is where we will strive to honour and transform our relationships with one another.
