Rebels win four in a row

Rebels defence freezes Ice in 2-1 victory

Feb 29, 2020 | 8:35 AM

The Red Deer Rebels played a gritty game to stay tied with the Winnipeg Ice for 57 minutes Friday night before scoring the game winning goal late to win 2-1 at the Westerner Park Centrium.

The Rebels came into Friday’s game riding a three game winning streak, something they’ve done three times already this season, while Winnipeg had lost three straight.

The Rebels were the first team on the scoreboard when Josh Tarzwell was awarded a penalty shot after making a solo rush up the ice while shorthanded. His 29th goal of the season squeaked through goalie Liam Hughes, extending the Red Deer native’s goal scoring streak to five games.

Winnipeg tied the game with 2:52 to play in the first period with a case of “right place, right time.” The Ice had a three-on-two opportunity, Michael Milne gave it to Nino Kinder, who put it on net from the blue line and the rebound popped out to Jakin Smallwood who tapped it home.

At the start of the second period, Jaxsen Wiebe and Karter Prosofsky decided to go at it at centre ice. Both players dropped their gear and did a couple circles to square up. Prosofsky caught Wiebe with a quick right and it was off. The Two went down once, but got back up and pushed the linesmen off before going down and up once more before finally hitting the ice for good in an absolute bout.

The shots at the end of the second period were 26-19 in favour of Winnipeg.

The Rebels waited until 2:17 was left in the game to take 2-1 lead on the Ice. After an icing, a timeout, a line change and a debate on which faceoff circle would be used, the puck was dropped and the Rebels gained control down low. Tarzwell stripped the Winnipeg defenceman below the goal line and threw the puck right onto the tape of Ben King. King wasted no time ripping a shot over Hughes’ left shoulder for his 18th goal of the year.

Ethan Anders stopped 37 shots to hold off Winnipeg to collect two points for the Rebels, along with their first four-game win streak of the season.

The Rebels play again Saturday night as they welcome the league leading Edmonton Oil Kings to the Westerner Park Centrium. The last time these two met the Oil Kings won 2-1 when Jake Neighbours scored with six seconds left in the hockey game.

The puck drops at 7 p.m. between the two teams, you can listen LIVE on 106.7 The Drive.
