Rebels win road trip finale in Prince George

Feb 17, 2020 | 7:36 PM

The Red Deer Rebels wrapped their five-game B.C. road trip on Monday by winning a Family Day matinee 4-2 over the Prince George Cougars.

The Rebels scored the first goal of the game 10:39 into the first period as red hot Josh Tarzwell scored his 27th on a setup from Jaxsen Wiebe.

All it took was a minute and seven seconds for Prince George to answer as Johnny Hooker shot from a bad angle and was able to sneak one past Byron Fancy for his 13th of the season.

The Rebels were outshot 15-5 through the first period but were able to hold onto an even score through twenty minutes.

The Cougars took their first lead in the hockey game 7:37 into the second period when Ethan Browne drove hard to the net and got a lucky bounce when a shot rebounded off Fancy, leaving him with the puck on his stick and an open net for an easy Prince George tally.

The Rebels evened the score when Ethan Rowland caught a breakaway pass from Dallon Melin and wheeled past two Prince George defenders to tuck home his third of the year past Cougars goalie Taylor Gauthier to tie the game at the 12:31 mark of period two.

Just over two minutes later, Red Deer lit the lamp again when Ethan Sakowich got the puck at the blue line, made a beautiful move to get around one Cougar defender, then threw the puck on net where Chris Douglas was sitting to push in this eleventh of the season to make it 3-2 15:12 into the second period.

The Rebels iced the game late in the third when Jayden Grubbe recorded an empty netter for his sixth of the year after a nice effort from Weibe to get him the puck.

The 4-2 Rebels victory gave the team their 20th win of the year. Fancy made 32 saves in the win as Red Deer capped off their five-game road trip with back-to-back wins.

The Rebels get back to action next Saturday when the Tri-City Americans visit the Westerner Park Centrium. Puck drops at 7 p.m., you can listen live on 106.7 The Drive.
