WHL TRADE DEADLINE

Rebels trade captain Barteaux to Winnipeg

Jan 10, 2020 | 4:04 PM

The Red Deer Rebels made just one trade on WHL Trade Deadline on Friday, and it was a big one involving their captain.

The Rebels sent defenceman Dawson Bearteaux, a fifth round selection in the 2020 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft and a sixth round bantam pick in 2023 to the Winnipeg ICE in exchange for a second round selection in the WHL Bantam Draft in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, as well as a fifth round pick in the 2021 WHL Bantam Draft and a conditional 3rd round WHL Bantam pick in 2023.

Barteaux, 19, is a signed prospect of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, meaning he in all likelihood will be playing pro hockey next season.

That being said, Rebels GM and head coach Brent Sutter said it was still an emotional trade to make.

“He’s a better person than he is a player,” Sutter shared in an interview with Cam Moon. “It’s been a tough trade on everybody, but it’s one (where) I have to set my feelings aside and do what I think is right for the organization moving forward.”

Sutter says the cluster of picks acquired in the trade will help the Rebels build around their current young core of players.

“We’ve made some big deals this year not only to help us for right now, but for down the road,” he said, highlighting November’s acquisition of Ben King from Swift Current as another example.

The Foxwarren, Manitoba native began his WHL career with the Regina Pats who selected him 14th overall in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. He came to the Rebels in a blockbuster trade on Jan. 10, 2017 along with Lane Zablocki and a first round bantam draft pick in exchange for defenceman Josh Mahura, forward Jeff de Wit and a conditional third round pick.

Sutter says Barteaux grew a lot during his three years with the Rebels.

“He carries himself so well and is such a great team guy, cared deeply about everything, how it was done, what’s being done, tremendously coachable.

“He’s been a Red Deer Rebel since he was 16 and as far as we’re concerned he’s always going to be a Red Deer Rebel.”

In 213 WHL regular season games, Barteaux has 17 goals and 76 assists for 96 points. He also has five assists in 12 career playoff games.

Barteaux won’t have to wait long to take on his former team as the Rebels visit the Winnipeg ICE on Saturday (6 p.m. on 106.7 THE DRIVE).
