Celebrating Female Hockey

Saturday gala celebrating female hockey in Red Deer

Nov 29, 2019 | 4:19 PM

The second annual Sutter Fund Female Hockey Gala goes this weekend at the Learning Commons at Red Deer College.

Event co-chair Tracy Burghardt says the fundraiser supports eight Red Deer Minor Hockey female hockey teams, ranging from Atom to Midget.

“Last year we had about 430 people at the Gala,” she recalls. “There’s a silent auction, live auction, live entertainment, we’ve got some special guests that are going to be appearing. We’ve partnered with Roger’s Hometown Hockey as well this year, so we’ve got a big extravaganza on Saturday night at Red Deer College.”

Despite the focus on fundraising, Burghardt says they also hope to celebrate female hockey in general.

“That’s actually the original goal behind it,” says Burghardt. “We are celebrating the teams during the day. We have some mentorship that’s happening between the older girls and the younger girls, we have our players attending the Midget AAA game over at Garry W. Harris during the afternoon to cheer those girls on, the whole day is girls supporting girls and trying to grow our female programs.”

Burghardt says Red Deer Minor Hockey currently has at least two teams at every level, with three at both the Bantam and Midget levels this year.

“That’s a big improvement from where we started the program,” says Burghardt. “I’m really encouraged by how the community and Red Deer Minor Hockey has really supported this event.”

Saturday night’s event begins at 7:30 p.m. featuring food, entertainment, and this year a visit from Tara Sloan from Roger’s Hometown Hockey, as well as members of the Sutter family.
