One of two people charged in the stabbing death of a Prince Edward Island man in Red Deer last spring has been granted bail.

Quentin Lee Strawberry, 38, was granted bail in Red Deer Provincial Court on Nov. 15. He is set to be released on Wednesday.

Strawberry faces charges of second-degree murder and assault causing bodily harm in the March 29, 2019 death of 45-year-old Joseph Junior Alfred Gallant.

According to RCMP, a man was located with serious injuries at a residence on 40A Avenue in the Grandview neighbourhood and later taken to hospital where he died.

Defense lawyer Maurice Collard says Strawberry maintains his innocence and is very happy to be returning to the community.

“The Charter dictates that Mr. Strawberry is presumed innocent, he looks forward to vigorously defending against these charges,” says Collard. “I’m confident he will not be convicted of murder. Decisions like this should increase public confidence in the administration of justice.”

Co-accused Jennifer Lee Caswell, 38, is also facing charges of second-degree murder and assault causing bodily harm.

Strawberry and Caswell are scheduled for a preliminary hearing starting Feb. 28, 2020 to determine if there’s enough evidence for the case to go to trial.
