PONOKA- A winning name has been selected by a panel of judges for the new civic building that houses the Ponoka Jubilee Library, the Ponoka Learning Centre, Town Council Chambers and Administrative offices at the north end of 50 St.

After carefully considering the 47 submissions received for the Building Naming Contest, the Judges Panel unanimously chose Ponoka Civic Centre as the official name to recommend to Town Council for the new building.

After additional research, the Judges Panel also recommended that the Cree word mamawayawin which means ‘meeting place’ or ‘gathering place’ also appear above or below the Ponoka Civic Centre in smaller letters once new signage is mounted onto the building.

There were three winners of the naming contest, Julie Feragen, Jeannette Van den Broek and Dave Piel.

They will each receive a $200 Town of Ponoka gift certificate that can be applied toward an Aquaplex membership or a utility bill credit.

The judges chose the Ponoka Civic Centre as the winning name for the new building for the following reasons:

– It clearly describes the purpose and function of the building as being the seat of local government.
– It is a central destination and community hub that local citizens visit frequently because it houses the Library, Town Hall and Ponoka Learning Centre.
– The judges also felt strongly that ‘Ponoka’ should be included in the building name.

They also chose to add ‘mamawayawin’ to the building name signage for the following reasons:
– It speaks to the Ponoka’s historical and current connection to local indigenous communities.
– The building is a meeting and gathering place for numerous purposes and is used daily as a quiet space to read, do homework and tutoring, socialize and hold public events.
