Weekly recap: October 16-20

RED DEER- The RDC Soccer teams wrapped up the regular season and the Kings advanced to the playoffs.

The Kings Basketball team defeated the Olds College Broncos at home.

The Basketball Queens displayed a solid work ethic, but couldn’t overtake the defending national champion Broncos.

The Hockey Kings downed the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in a pair of games.

The RDC Kings Volleyball team split their weekend series with the Briercrest College Clippers on the road.

The Volleyball Queens gained some valuable playing experience, but fell to the Clippers in a pair of matches.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week in RDC Athletics:

Queens Soccer | Wednesday, Oct. 16 | SAIT

The RDC Queens dropped the afternoon contest 2-0 to the SAIT Trojans. Kayla Nesseth earned the Queens Player-of-the-Game award.

Queens Soccer | Saturday, Oct. 19 | RDC Main Field

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks defeated the Red Deer College Queens 7-0. Rebecca McBride was named the Collegiate Sports Medicine Queens Player-of-the-Game.

Queens Soccer | Sunday, Oct. 20 | RDC Main Field

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers downed the Queens 6-0 in the last regular season contest. Kayla Nesseth was selected the Collegiate Sports Medicine Queens Player-of-the-Game.

The RDC Queens (4-8-0) dealt with many injuries throughout the season and missed the playoffs.

Kings Soccer | Wednesday, Oct. 16 | SAIT

The SAIT Trojans downed the RDC Kings 6-0. Second-year defender Brandon Fedoruk was recognized as the Kings top performer.

Kings Soccer | Saturday, Oct. 19 | RDC Main Field

The RDC Kings and Lethbridge College Kodiaks tied 0-0. Gabriel Martins Fonseca was named the Collegiate Sports Medicine Kings Player-of-the-Game.

Kings Soccer | Sunday, Oct. 20 | RDC Main Field

In the final regular season game, the Kings defeated the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 2-0 and advanced to the playoffs. Turner Johnson and Nathan Swartz scored. Kings goalkeeper Jacob Hamilton was named the Collegiate Sports Medicine Kings Player-of-the-Game. The RDC Kings (7-3-2) finished third in the south, advancing to the quarter-finals against the Concordia University Thunder (8-3-1). The teams will meet on Friday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. in Edmonton.

Queens Basketball | Saturday, Oct. 19 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer College Queens (0-1) dropped their home opener 80-64 to the Olds College Broncos (1-0). Amy Szymanek scored 19 points, had six rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Queens.

Kings Basketball | Saturday, Oct. 19 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In their home opener, the Kings (1-0) defeated the Broncos (0-1) by a score of 92-62. Spencer Klassen led both teams with 38 points.

Kings Hockey | Friday, Oct. 18 | U of A Augustana

In Camrose, the RDC Kings won 3-1 over the U of A Augustana Vikings. Scott Ferguson, Austin Hunter and Mathieu Lapointe found the back of the net for the Kings. Arik Weersink, made 33 saves.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, Oct. 19 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The second place Kings (3-0-1-0) picked up a 5-4 victory over the Vikings (1-3-0-0) in a rematch. Kyle Salaway, Tyrell Mappin and Jacob Wozney scored singles for the Kings. Lynnden Pastachak had a pair of goals. Kings goaltender Nathan Alalouf turned aside 31 shots for the win.

Queens Volleyball | Friday, Oct. 18 | Briercrest College

The Briercrest College Clippers earned a four set win over the RDC Queens (26-24, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-13). Red Deer’s Emma Holmes recorded nine kills, six digs and four aces.

Queens Volleyball | Saturday, Oct. 19 | Briercrest College

The RDC Queens (0-2) dropped a three set decision to the Clippers (2-0) by scores of 19-25, 21-25 and 18-25.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, Oct. 18 | Briercrest College

The Red Deer College Kings won in five sets over the Briercrest College Clippers (21-25, 25-17, 25-18, 22-25 and 15-13). Setter Thomas Wass finished with 51 assists, seven digs and one ace.

Kings Volleyball | Saturday, Oct. 19 | Briercrest College

The Red Deer College Kings (1-1) were downed in three sets by the Clippers (25-27, 20-25 and 20-25).
