Charity checkstop brings warmth for those in need, funds for crime prevention

Oct 19, 2019 | 4:15 PM

The Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre held its fifth annual Coats for Kids Charity Checkstop on Saturday.

Members from the CACPC, Citizens on Patrol and other partners were out on Taylor Drive just north of the college collecting items that will help keep those in need from going cold this fall and winter.

Cash donations were also taken to help the CACPC with its ongoing work.

“We’re doing a lot of crime prevention presentations, we have our Wise Owl presentation for seniors which is about how to protect themselves from scams and fraud,” said Janise Somer, program coordinator.

“We’re doing a lot more initiatives with community associations; they’re excellent, and one of the reasons they’re getting active again is that they feel the need to address the issue of crime in their neighbourhoods. Knowing your neighbours is the number one crime prevention tool.”

If you missed the charity checkstop and would still like to donate, coats can be dropped off at Victory Church (98 Oberlin Avenue) while monetary donations for the Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre can be brought to their office at 5015 48 Street.

Totals from the checkstop will be shared later this coming week.
