Humanitarian ER Doctor James Maskalyk to speak at Red Deer Public Library
James Maskalyk, author of Life on the Ground Floor: Letters from the Edge of Emergency Medicine, is set to speak at Red Deer Public Library October 17. Readers selected Maskalyk’s memior from a list of three nominees as the 2019 Red Deer Reads Community-wide Book Club winner in August.
Since then, the book has been “flying off the shelves” as people get ready for James to visit says Briana Ehnes, Adult Services Manager at Red Deer Public Library. Although James’ medical memoir won the Red Deer reads title, she explains, it really is Red Deerians who win.
“We are so excited to have such a fascinating author come to our city,” she says. “James’ heartbreakingly, rewarding experiences and personal stories are so inspiring. I think his presentation, like the book, will change people’s perspectives about health care as they hear about facilities in other countries which don’t have access to medical equipment, supplies, or even doctors like we do here in Canada.”
Maskalyk practices emergency medicine and trauma at one of Canada’s largest and busiest hospitals in Toronto.
