Humanitarian ER Doctor James Maskalyk to speak at Red Deer Public Library

Oct 12, 2019 | 2:01 AM

James Maskalyk, author of Life on the Ground Floor: Letters from the Edge of Emergency Medicine, is set to speak at Red Deer Public Library October 17. Readers selected Maskalyk’s memior from a list of three nominees as the 2019 Red Deer Reads Community-wide Book Club winner in August.

Since then, the book has been “flying off the shelves” as people get ready for James to visit says Briana Ehnes, Adult Services Manager at Red Deer Public Library. Although James’ medical memoir won the Red Deer reads title, she explains, it really is Red Deerians who win.

“We are so excited to have such a fascinating author come to our city,” she says. “James’ heartbreakingly, rewarding experiences and personal stories are so inspiring. I think his presentation, like the book, will change people’s perspectives about health care as they hear about facilities in other countries which don’t have access to medical equipment, supplies, or even doctors like we do here in Canada.”

Maskalyk practices emergency medicine and trauma at one of Canada’s largest and busiest hospitals in Toronto.

In 2010, his restless ambition led him to Ethiopia where he volunteered with the medical organization Médecins Sans Frontières to help create the country’s first emergency room in Addis Ababa’s Black Lion Hospital. Life on the Ground Floor bounces between his work at Addis Ababa’s Black Lion Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, detailing the stark contrasts between the two.

The book includes personal tales about his relationship with and care of his aging grandfather

in a small Alberta town, which serves to further engage readers with relatable health care issues.

An Evening with James Maskalyk is Thursday, October 17, 7 p.m. at the Downtown Branch, 4818 49th St. BIG 105 will be live on site and Chapters will be selling copies of James’ book. There will be a book signing, prize giveaways and free refreshments. Guests can get complimentary tickets via Eventbrite https://tinyurl.com/y26atwqs
