Train derailment shuts down Highway 2A north of Red Deer

Sep 28, 2019 | 11:55 AM

Highway 2A has reopened between Red Deer and Blackfalds following a late night train derailment on Friday.

Blackfalds RCMP and CP Rail police responded after the train left the tracks near Range Road 272 shortly before midnight on Friday.

CP Rail spokesperson Jeremy Berry says no crew members were injured when the derailment happened.

“Three of the cars involved in the derailment – each carrying fuel products – were found to be leaking,” Berry explains. “The spilled product was contained, with vacuum trucks being used to recover any visible product on the ground. There is no impact to waterways.”

Highway 2A is closed in both directions from Blindman Drive to Range Road 272 while cleanup continues.

The Transportation Safety Board announced Saturday afternoon it has also deployed a team to the site to gather more information and assess the circumstances of the crash.

“The TSB is an independent agency that investigates marine, pipeline, railway and aviation transportation occurrences. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability,” the TSB notes in its release.

The investigation into what caused the derailment is ongoing.
