Central Alberta FASD Network raises awareness on International FASD Day
The Central Alberta Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Network recognized the 26th anniversary of International FASD Day on Wednesday by raising awareness of the disorder.
They started the day off on Wednesday morning at City Hall where they read the Mayor’s proclamation to officially recognize the day and the families impacted by FASD. They also lit up City Hall with red lights, which is representative of ‘red shoes rock,’ a grassroots way of celebrating people impacted by FASD.
Meanwhile, in the afternoon until 7 p.m., the network held a free event at Bower Ponds where people could come and learn more about FASD. There was also free food, boat rides, face painting, a mocktail station, and other fun activities.
Executive Director Julie Nanson-Ashton said FASD Day is recognized on the ninth day of the ninth month every year, which symbolizes the nine months of pregnancy.
