TRADE RESTRICTIONS LIFTED

Alberta removing more trade barriers

SAINT JOHN N.B.- Premier Jason Kenney has told a business audience in New Brunswick that his government will drop more trade barriers.

Kenney announced during a speech to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Saint John on Saturday that the province will remove eight of 14 remaining exceptions to the Canadian Free Trade Agreement.

The exceptions deal with areas such as the energy sector, alcohol and the sale of public lands.

“Internal barriers to trade and labour mobility within our country cost the Canadian economy between $50 billion and $130 billion every year. Our government continues to lead on scrapping barriers to free trade and welcoming the investment, economic growth and jobs that come with an open economy.”

Kenney adds it will move Alberta from being the province with the third-highest number of exemptions to the province with the fewest exemptions in Canada.

He notes there has been progress in removing provincial trade barriers and he believes other premiers want free trade, but progress has been — quote — “virtually glacial.”
