High school football season is here

Sep 5, 2019 | 1:53 PM

With training camps now in the books, game action gets underway this weekend on the high school football circuit.

The Lindsay Thurber Raiders open the year as the 9th ranked team in Tier 1. Last year’s surprise team is this year’s mystery team, according the Football Alberta season preview.

After years of spinning their wheels, the Raiders had a breakout 2018 campaign that saw them go 7-2 in regular season play and advance to the Northern Tier I Final where they acquitted themselves quite nicely in a 49-21 loss to Harry Ainlay.

Devon Hand takes over from last year’s Alberta Tier I Coach of the Year, Aaron Sheppard, and their only returnee of note is Team Alberta U17 linebacker Chase Pack.

The Raiders take on Cardston in exhibition play Friday night at 7 p.m. at Setters Place (Great Chief Park).

The reigning local league champion Hunting Hills Lightning open 2019 as the 4th ranked team in Tier 2.

Hunting Hills takes on Henry Wisewood (Calgary) at 4 p.m. Friday at Setters Place.

The Notre Dame Cougars, who enter the season unranked in Tier 2, are in action this Saturday, Sept. 7 versus Robert Thirsk (Calgary) as part of Football Day in Red Deer.

The H.J. Cody Lakers are ranked 5th in Tier 3, while the Stettler Wildcats are ranked 3rd and the Ponoka Broncs are ranked 9th in Tier 4.

Ponoka hosts Rocky Mountain House for their opening game on Friday while Stettler visits Drayton Valley.
