Construction is nearly set to begin on a new seniors lodge in south Red Deer.

Demolition of the old Red Deer Nursing Home at 30 Street and Bremner Avenue has been completed and work on the new facility will start by the end of August, according to a spokesperson with the Ministry of Seniors and Housing.

It was announced in March by the previous NDP government that the Piper Creek Lodge, opened in 1956 at 4820 33 Street, would be demolished in lieu of a brand new facility half a kilometre south.

The project is worth $28 million and will have 100 units, an increase from the 65 at the original Piper Creek Lodge.
