City encourages emergency preparedness as national week kicks off

May 5, 2019 | 1:07 PM

The City of Red Deer is encouraging residents to be emergency ready as May 5-11 is National Emergency Preparedness Week.

There are three easy steps for residents and families to remember, including: 1) Know the risks in your community; 2) Make an emergency plan; and 3) Get a 72-hour emergency kit.

“We see emergencies impacting people across Canada every year,” says Karen Mann, Emergency Management Coordinator. “Every time an emergency occurs, we see that preparedness for individuals and families works! It makes people more resilient and less vulnerable to disaster impacts. This makes our community stronger!”

Mann adds that each part of the city is unique and people should be aware of the risks specific to where they live.

“Risks in our community vary depending on the area” Mann says. “For example, if you live close to flowing water, you want to be prepared for flooding. If you are close to industry, railways or a major highway, you should know the steps to shelter in place. Risk awareness is key to preparedness!”
