Church eyed as home for Lacombe Performing Arts Centre

Lacombe is one step closer to getting a permanent performing arts centre.

The Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation is currently working with the City of Lacombe to acquire the Trinity Lutheran Church building and transform it into their new home.

Foundation president Grant Harder says the building is, “Very very close to what we’re looking for in terms of a theatre or a performance space. It’s centrally located, it’s got lots of parking, easy to find, it has a great vestibule.

“[There’s] also a foyer, where we can host art shows, art exhibits, book signings, things of that nature. It’s got a couple of great meeting rooms for smaller events, and what they use as a sanctuary today, will seat about 150 people.”

Currently, most performances in Lacombe take places in different churches in the city. But Harder thinks the community needs a non-denominational space where people can come and enjoy a show and not feel like they’re in church.

“Because let’s face it, some people will not attend that church because it’s a church,” he points out.

The Lacombe Performing arts Center Foundation currently has a lease on the space, but notes that they would like to move forward with making sure the City of Lacombe purchases the building.

“The building will not be for sale forever,” says Harder. “We would like to move forward as quickly as possible.”

Harder says the current plan is that the City would acquire the building and act as the landlord with the Foundation acting as the tenant.
