Alberta Sheriffs urge road users to take care this long weekend

Aug 31, 2018 | 10:16 AM

Alberta RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs are sharing safety tips in light of both the Labour Day long weekend and the start of the school year.

With increased traffic both on city streets and on the highways over the coming days, they say, vigilance is extra important and the responsibility is shared between all users of the roads.

“Our number one priority in Integrated Traffic Units is to ensure that all road users are safe. As we head into the Labour Day long weekend, we remind drivers to share the road with other motorists and to respect the law,” says Supt. Rick Gardner, Alberta Traffic Sheriffs. “Speeding and impairment by alcohol and drugs remain a leading cause of death on Alberta roads – please drive sober and free of distractions.”

On Labour Day long weekend in 2017, there were 394 MVCs in Alberta alone, four of which involved fatalities.

In all of 2017, speeding was believed to be a factor in at least one out of every five fatal crashes, while impairment by drugs or alcohol was a factor in at least one of every three.

Additionally, students headed back to class are encouraged to walk only on sidewalks and to use marked crosswalks and controlled intersections.

Parents are urged to take the time to over important tips with their children, including making eye contact with drivers before crossing the street to be sure they are seen.

Drivers are reminded to be careful when driving in and around school and playground zones.
